How to Install SPC Flooring at Home: A Complete DIY Guide

Modern kitchen island paired with light wood-look SPC flooring for a durable indoor floor

If you have been putting off a flooring upgrade because you think it means hiring a contractor and living around a construction mess for a week, here is some good news. SPC flooring is one of the easiest floors to install yourself. There is no glue, no nails, and no curing time. The planks click and lock together over your existing subfloor, and most rooms can be finished in a single day.

SPC stands for stone plastic composite flooring, a rigid-core vinyl plank built around a compressed limestone core. That rigid core is exactly what makes installation so forgiving. The planks stay flat, the locking edges line up cleanly, and small subfloor imperfections are less likely to show through. Here is how to get it done right, step by step.

What You'll Need Before You Start

Gather everything before the first plank goes down. Half the frustration in DIY flooring is hunting for a missing tool mid-row.

Item

What It Is For

Decolite SPC planks

The floor itself. Order 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts and wastage

Tapping block

Locks planks together tightly without damaging the click edges

Pull bar

Pulls the last plank in each row snug where the tapping block will not fit

Spacers (10mm)

Keeps the expansion gap consistent along every wall

Utility knife or fine-tooth saw

Scores and snaps planks cleanly to length

Measuring tape and pencil

Accurate layout, marking, and cut lines

Rubber mallet

Gentle persuasion for stubborn joints, always with the tapping block

Like most indoor flooring projects, measuring accurately upfront saves money. Measure your room area, add a 10 percent wastage allowance, and round up to the next full box. You can browse plank options in the Indoor Flooring collection at Builders Home.

Preparing Your Subfloor

This is the step most DIYers rush, and it is the one that decides whether your floor lasts ten years or two. SPC is rigid, but it still follows the surface underneath it. Your subfloor needs to be three things: flat (no more than 3mm of variation over 2 meters), dry, and clean.

On Concrete Subfloors

Concrete is the most common subfloor in Philippine homes, and it works well for SPC. Check for moisture first: tape a small plastic sheet to the slab and leave it for 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, let the slab dry out before installing. Grind down high spots, fill low spots and cracks with a leveling compound, then sweep and vacuum thoroughly.

On Existing Tiles

SPC can go directly over existing tiles, no demolition needed. Just make sure the tiles are level and firmly bonded. Re-fix any loose tiles, and fill deep grout lines with a skim coat or leveling compound so they do not telegraph through the planks over time. You can find sealants and surface prep supplies in the Adhesives and Sealants collection.

Step-by-Step SPC Floor Installation

Step 1: Acclimate the Planks for 24 Hours

Lay the unopened boxes flat in the room where they will be installed and leave them for 24 hours. This lets them adjust to room temperature so they do not expand or contract right after installation.

Step 2: Lay Your First Row

Start along the longest straight wall, with the tongue edge facing the room. Place 10mm spacers between the planks and the wall to maintain the expansion gap. Take your time here: if the first row is not perfectly straight, every row after it will drift.

Step 3: Click and Lock Each Plank

Angle the next plank into the long edge of the previous row at about 25 degrees, lower it flat, then tap it snug with the tapping block. Stagger the end joints by at least 25 to 30 centimeters from row to row. Staggering is not just for looks; it makes the whole floor stronger.

Step 4: Cut Around Doorways and Obstacles

For straight cuts, score the plank with a utility knife and snap it cleanly. For door frames, undercut the jamb with a handsaw so the plank slides underneath for a seamless finish. Use the pull bar to lock the final plank in each row where the tapping block will not fit.

Step 5: Install Finishing Trims

Remove all the spacers, then install skirting or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap. Fix the trim to the wall, never to the floor, so the planks can still move freely. Add transition strips at doorways. And if you are sourcing SPC flooring Philippines wide, Builders Home has you covered, with next-day delivery available for Metro Manila and nearby provinces on orders placed before 12:00 PM.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Five mistakes cause most failed DIY installations:

  • Skipping acclimation. Planks installed straight from a hot delivery truck will shift as they adjust to room temperature.

  • No expansion gap. SPC expands slightly with heat. Without the 10mm gap, the floor can buckle at the edges.

  • Not staggering the joints. Aligned end joints create weak lines across the floor and look unnatural.

  • Rushing subfloor prep. Every bump and dip underneath eventually shows in the finished floor.

  • Tapping directly on the plank edge. Always use a tapping block. Hitting the click profile with a bare mallet damages the lock.

SPC Flooring Care After Installation

Your new floor needs very little. Sweep or dry-mop regularly, and damp-mop with a mild cleaner when needed. Skip the wax, polish, and steam mops; SPC does not need them, and steam can stress the locking joints. Add felt pads under furniture legs and your SPC flooring will look new for years.
